When we were in Honolulu (which is where we’re from, so you’d think they’d be more willing to eat somewhere local and interesting), we were wandering around Waikiki one night trying to decide where to eat. I kept suggesting all sorts of interesting-looking places, but my family just kept saying, “no, I don’t think we’ll like that.” We walked almost the entire length of Kalakaua Avenue and ended up outside of Jimmy Buffet’s Cheeseburger in Paradise, which my family seemed pretty excited about.
I f*****g lost it.
I was super p****d because this was one of the last days of our trip and I had been putting up with this s**t the whole time. And this was how it was going to end? At the the most touristy restaurant in Hawaii? Not if I could help it. So I had a minor meltdown and they relented and we started walking back, this time down Kuhio Ave, which was a mistake, because it has nearly zero restaurants.
So we make pretty much back to where we started and couldn’t find anything that anyone was willing to compromise on. And then my mom suggests…
Jimmy F*****g Buffet’s Restaurant and Bar.
Until that moment, I didn’t know Jimmy Buffet had two different restaurants in Waikiki, but he did, and I ended up begrudgingly eating at one of them.
